Saya Woolfalk: Archive of Earth: Ark
Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx, NY
Opening Fall 2026
Production | Exhibition Grant
For the inaugural commission in the Bronx Museum’s new South Wing, Saya Woolfalk will create Archive of Earth: Ark, a monumental multimedia installation comprising video projection, vinyl window treatments, wall drawings, and sculpture that expands on her mythological Empathic Universe. The project focuses on a new character within this fictive world: the Woods Woman, a healer evolved from the landscape of which she is part. Archive of Earth: Ark pushes the boundaries of Woolfalk’s sculptural practice, expanding on the science fiction-inflected and richly articulated worlds that she has been building for two decades. Occupying the entire new South Wing Atrium, the installation will incorporate video inside the museum, and projections with motion sensor technology onto the sidewalk outside the museum, Instagram filter technology allowing visitors to imagine themselves as characters within the work, stained-glass-like vinyl window treatments and wall drawings, along with a large mixed media sculpture: an inverted ark comprising textiles, beads, glass, metal, and paper, suspended in the new multi-story space.
Woolfalk’s installation will launch The Bronx Museum’s newly renovated and substantially reimagined South Wing, which has been redesigned for optimal engagement and improved visitor experience. Planned with the intention of creating greater connection, access, and porosity between the museum and the local community, this inviting street-level atrium welcomes visitors and passers-by to enter the exhibition space or to experience the artwork from the sidewalk through the glass façade.
