Kara Walker: Unmanned Drone

The Brick, Los Angeles

In 2021, The Brick (formerly LAXART) acquired an equestrian monument depicting Confederate general Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and its accompanying base from the city of Charlottesville, Virginia. Charlottesville hoped that by giving the monuments to organizations, they would explicitly reveal “their history as symbols of white supremacy.” In order to fully and unequivocally confront the Lost Cause mythology, The Brick has commissioned Kara Walker, whose practice has long engaged American history and the legacy of slavery, to create a new work using this monument as material.

The exhibition of Walker’s sculpture is being mounted under the auspices of MONUMENTS, a major project co-organized by The Brick and The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (MOCA). For more information, visit LAXART: MONUMENTS.
