Chloë Bass: If you hear something, free something
MTA public address system, New York, NY
Presented by Creative Time
September 3 to October 5, 2025
Production | Exhibition Grant
In 2025 Creative Time is working with Chloë Bass, a multiform conceptual artist working in performance, conversation, situation, publication, and installation. Bass’s first sonic work, If you hear something, free something (hear/free), calls on the long history of public address in public space. Historically, campaigns of public address have asked the public to be vigilant and watchful of our neighboring commuters. Drawing on two recent campaign slogans: “If You See Something, Say Something®” and “Courtesy Counts,” Bass counters this to deepen New Yorkers’ collective acts of care, moving beyond watchfulness and into connectivity. Hear/free issues an invitation to move, act, and speak together in order to promote the restoration of an inner emotional life in public space.
