Artists Space: Openings
Artists Space, New York, NY
2019
Incubator Grant
Artists Space will undertake one of its most experimental and ambitious curatorial initiatives in its recent history to mark the opening of its new building at 11 Cortlandt Alley. At the project’s foundation is a series of commissioned works in various formats and from an expansive range of critical perspectives. A number of specially commissioned works will be installed in an exhibition that features artists working both in New York and internationally, while a series of live performance works, readings, screenings, and musical performances will accompany the project. By inviting artists to consult on the design of their space and explore Artists Space’s new home, the exhibition will foreground artistic practice as an essential method for relating to space, negotiating history, and embracing new possibilities. Executive Director and Chief Curator Jay Sanders described the presentation as more than an exhibition: “We intend our opening project at 80 White Street to become an organism; structurally determined by the artists who constitute it, creating a volatile and restless collaboration of durational and presentational forms that in turn inform us, the institution, of how we might adapt to our own working methodologies and protocols to best support artists and publics in New York today.”
Founded in 1972, Artists Space quickly became a leading organization in New York’s downtown alternative arts scene. It remains a vital space for artistic innovation, social awareness, and critical thinking and provides resources to artists who address urgent aesthetic, social, political, and cultural issues.
