Charles Atlas The Mathematics of Consciousness

Pioneer Works

September 9 – November 20, 2022

2022 Production | Exhibition Grant

The Mathematics of Consciousness is a major immersive installation that responds to Pioneer Works’ striking architectural space. Drawing on his decades-long engagement with video and his developing interest in science, Charles Atlas will project a new video onto the 110-feet wide by 34-feet tall interior façade of the building. The installation will be comprised of new sequences alongside segments culled from the artist’s extensive archive of both original work and found footage. Unified by a newly commissioned musical score composed by Lazar Bozic, the video will flicker across a long wall of double-height windows, bathing the space in color and reflecting on philosophical questions about memory, thought formations and numerical expressions. The installation will host a dynamic roster of performances and discussions on the nature of science and philosophy, each live-mixed by the artist and presented in an architectural environment created by ongoing collaborator Mika Tajima.

Coinciding with Pioneer Works’ 10th anniversary reopening, The Mathematics of Consciousness responds to the organization’s newly renovated space and connects to its unique science program. Founded in 2012 by artist Dustin Yellin, Pioneer Works is an artist and scientist-led nonprofit cultural center in Red Hook, Brooklyn that fosters innovative thinking through the visual and performing arts, technology, music, and science. Its mission is to build community through the arts and sciences to create an open and inspired world. Over the past decade, Pioneer Works has become a new model for cultural organizations and a cornerstone of contemporary art and community in Brooklyn.
