Nicole Eisenman: Fixed Crane for Madison Square Park
Madison Square Park, New York, NY
October 24, 2024–March 9, 2025
Production | Exhibition Grant
Nicole Eisenman’s Fixed Crane for Madison Square Park is a monumental sculpture commissioned on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Madison Square Park Conservancy’s public art program. Eisenman’s sculpture features a toppled decommissioned industrial 1969 Link-Belt crane lain across the park’s Oval Lawn. Embellished with handmade sculptural forms, the work destabilizes familiar heroic objects associated with human achievement and exploration. The dormant crane echoes the destabilizing feeling of a city constantly in flux. Fixed Crane for Madison Square Park will bring the work of one the most distinguished contemporary artists to the 6.2-acre civic lawn that welcomes over 50,000 people daily.
Since 2004, Madison Square Park Conservancy has commissioned outdoor work by dynamic artists for all to view in civic space. In 2024, the art program will celebrate its twentieth anniversary with four artist projects, a major publication, a symposium with alumni artists, a short documentary, alumni artist audio interviews, and outreach to new communities.
