In 2017, Art21 will release 12 new films as part of the documentary series, New York Close Up. The series chronicles the lives of New York-based emerging artists in the first decade of their career, and provides glimpses into their artistic practice, taking visitors into their studios and apartments, places of work and leisure. Artists featured include Lucas Blalock, Louise Despont, Abigail DeVille, Rashid Johnson, Jamian Juliano-Villani, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Jacolby Satterwhite, and Bryan Zanisnik, among others. Since it launched in 2011, New York Close Up has featured 30 artists in 70 films, connecting artists and their viewers through its unique brand of storytelling and working to preserve and advance New York’s cultural landscape. A new group of artists is currently being selected for an upcoming VIA-supported season.
