In 2017, Art21 released ten new films as part of the documentary series, New York Close Up. The series chronicles the lives of New York-based emerging artists in the first decade of their career, and provides glimpses into their artistic practice, taking visitors into their studios and apartments, places of work and leisure. Artists featured in the VIA-supported season include Jamian Juliano-Villani, David Brooks, Raúl de Nieves, Avery Singer, Jordan Casteel, Meriem Bennani, Aki Sasamoto, and Caroline Woolard. Since it launched in 2011, New York Close Up has featured over 40 artists in 93 films, connecting artists and their viewers through its unique brand of storytelling and working to preserve and advance New York’s cultural landscape.
