Artpace, San Antonio, Texas

January – May, 2019

Incubator Grant

VIA Art Fund is proud to have sponsored the Spring 2019 International Artist-in-Residence (IAIR) Program at Artpace. Led by guest curator Deborah Willis, Chair of the Department and Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, the Program  hosted Tucson-based multimedia artist Sama Alshaibi, London-based photographer Roshini Kempadoo, and San Antonio-based ceramicist/performance artist Jennifer Ling Datchuk. The works of the selected artists addressed themes such as feminism, exile, race, resistance, and resilience through different media, materials, and props. Following their two-month residency, the artists’ works were shown at Artpace during a two-month long exhibition.

Artpace San Antonio is a nonprofit residency program which supports regional, national, and international artists in the creation of new art. As a catalyst for artistic expression, they engage local communities with global art practices and experiences. The International Artist-in-Residence (IAIR) Program provides nine artists per year with a studio, furnished apartment, living stipend, production budget, access to a fully-equipped workshop, and the support of a full-time studio staff.
